about

James #2: The idea for this song came about after I went to an art exhibition about war, which featured a wide range of harrowing and poignant images. Unsurprisingly, the exhibit left me feeling disillusioned and sombre, but upon returning to my flat and kicking back for a bit, I realised that the injustices of war had left my mind and I was back to being perfectly content in my little first world bubble. So I wrote this song based on the realisation that the convenience and relative luxury of our lives can make it very difficult to stay outraged by the bigger issues in the world.

Don't take this as a preachy song intended to make you feel bad for being content in your own life and ignoring the rest of the world; the point is that I'm very guilty of that. This song was simply me expressing a problem I found in myself - one that I assume a lot of us can relate to.

Rocket: I can't claim to have written as many lyrics as James #2 for this song, but I did write the first verse which sets the tone of the song. I chose to focus what everything bad we see on the news etc. boils down - people dying unnecessarily, when they could easily have been saved if we weren't all distracted by our own lives.

lyrics

See the destruction in the world, you see it every day.
A child born, a mother lost - both we could have saved.
In the end it's not our fight to fight what for is right.
The only thing I care about is my life.

I'm angry for the minute but it's hard when I'm so jaded.
I can't help the fact I'm so easily placated. That's the world.
World of injustice and distraction.
There's so much to love and hate.
World of thoughts with no action.
And don't we feel great?

Show me war or genocide, I'll be honestly distraught.
Partly with myself, for the last time I forgot.
I'll recall that I can't change a damn thing on this earth
And empathy is futile in its worth.

I'm angry for the minute but it's hard when I'm so jaded.
I can't help the fact I'm so easily placated. That's the world.
World of injustice and distraction.
There's so much to love and hate.
World of thoughts with no action.
And don't we feel great?

I'm not saying that there's a conspiracy.
Soma isn't making us happy.
Tv, radio and internet are innocent.
It's human nature to invent.
But there's a trap in these black mirrors.
We're paralysed when they are near us.
They distract us from the real world.
In our blankets we stay curled.

There's always something – to distract us.
Always a pea – in our mattress.
Unless someone – nuke attacked us,
We'd be blind to – global factors.
So raise your head; leave your bed
Don't forget the things you've read.
Raise your head; pull the thread.
Think about the world instead.

World of injustice and distraction.
There's so much to love and hate.
World of thoughts with no action.
And don't we feel
Don't we feel
Don't we feel great?
